The mission of the Gifted Education Committee is to systematically and purposefully identify and cultivate gifted students, providing them with appropriate educational opportunities to fully develop their individual potentials, catering for the educational needs of gifted students.




Who are gifted students?
According to the definition used by the Hong Kong Education Bureau based on the Fourth Report of the Education Commission in 1990, children who demonstrate outstanding performance or potential in one or more of the following areas are considered gifted:

 

● a. High-level intellectual abilities as measured by an IQ of 130 or above
● b. Exceptional aptitude in a particular subject
● c. Creative thinking and the ability to generate numerous innovative and insightful ideas
● d. Exceptional talents in visual and performing arts such as drawing, drama, dance, and music
● e. Gifted leadership abilities to effectively motivate and guide peers towards common goals, or
● f. Exceptional talents in fine motor skills, mechanical abilities, or physical coordination

 

Additionally, Hong Kong adopts a broad definition to interpret “gifted” and the following are some common traits associated with gifted students:

7. Enjoy problem-solving and hypothesis formation

3. Rich imagination

8. Ability to handle complex and abstract concepts

4. Quick learning

Overview of Gifted Education at Our School


In the context of the New Senior Secondary Diversity Learning Grant (Gifted Program), students have opportunities for in-school or out-of-school training in various fields such as STEM and leadership. Reviewing our school's gifted education curriculum, we aim to focus on developing students' generic skills, including self-management skills, problem-solving abilities, and creativity, to provide them with a solid foundation to face the challenges of the new senior secondary curriculum and develop their potentials during the secondary school stage. The mission of education is to provide opportunities for students with different abilities to unleash their potentials. Gifted students, with their higher abilities, are inspired through in-class and extracurricular activities and training, fostering their growth in various aspects such as learning, social interaction, and emotions, resulting in joyful development for students.

Scope/Models of School-based Gifted Education Implementation:


a. Whole-class Approach (School-based)

Integrate high-level thinking skills, creativity, and personal and social abilities as three major elements of gifted education into regular curriculum.

Teachers are required to design challenging and high order thinking questions in assessments and exams. Teachers also group students according to their abilities within the classroom.

 

Implement group teaching, enrichment, and extension programs based on students' characteristics within regular classes. Specialized learning content is provided in specific areas.

c. External Support Services

The Education Bureau's Gifted Education Section and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education collaborate with tertiary institutions, educational organizations/groups to provide challenging external enrichment and extension learning opportunities for specially recommended gifted students from schools.
