Spring breeze greets us gently and makes ways for the 50th anniversary of Wai Kiu College. Inside the Garden of Triumphant Pine, flower blossoms well in time and the garden is perfumed with greenery. Nature beauty graces us with its presence. On the same token, smiles on the face of teachers and fellow students resonate the beauty of nature. Golden jubilee is indeed a festive day for celebration. A decade has passed, time has tested Wai Kiu College and it proves to be standing still, professing on the mission to cultivate young minds.
Starting as a community school, it has turned new leaves again and again. With times, it is reformed to be what is now an established school sponsored by the Direct Subsidy Scheme. Wai Kiu College advocates holistic education. The school motto “perseverance, courage, loyalty and diligence” sets to promote virtues of character. Not only do we support each student to progress further than they thought possible, we also emphasize on students having led dignifying lives. Graduates of Wai Kiu College move steadfast and work tirelessly towards their goals. 50 years have passed in glimpse, 2019 marks the milestone of how much we have done in our mission and, how far we have gone.
As the principal, I have walked with Wai Kiu for thirty years. I witness the changes and development, and I grow and mature with the school together. In retrospection, the renovated Wai Kiu College campus has got a “facelift”. Its facilities have improved yet its reminiscence lingers. Many graduates I have taught myself are in the workforce serving our society. Some return schools to pick up teaching. They go hand-in-hand with the young in every step of their learning. There are businessmen who foster trade and economic activities, composers who compose beautiful pieces, football players who make every goal and score count and singers who bring joys to the ears. Being the “Father” of many sons and daugthers, I am proud of their achievements.

Since being the principal, I took up the lead to develop WKC’s mission and it has indeed been my utmost honour. In many years, I witnessed how students achieved their goals through tireless effort, strong will and determining spirit. Even though trouble and obstacles get in, they stay hungry and eager for success. Looking back the year of 2018, students made us proud as they always have been. Chen Lini from 4C got Outstanding Student Award in the Hong Kong Youth Award Scheme. 5B Huang Mai was awarded in the 2018 Hong Kong Outstanding Youth. Many students obtained scholarships from external institutions. This encourages them to seek for continual excellence. NCS (Non-Chinese Speaking) students perform equally satisfactorily. Our ethnically Indian student, Arminder Singh from 6A was admitted into HKU, proving the implementation of the NCS scheme a success. For seven consecutive years, the school has been awarded as a Caring school in the "Caring School Award Scheme" by the Education Bureau. It recognized teachers, parents’ effort to making the school a caring and loving community over the years. I am deeply touched.
In terms of external competitions, the Chinese Recitation Team has once again brought good news. The team won championship in the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association for the third time. This year we secured 1 champion, 2 first runner ups and 1 second runner-up. What an encouraging note! In writing competitions, 5C Mok Lai Sim obtained 1st runner up among senior form in the “Salute to Teachers writing competition”. Junior form NCS students obtained championship in the “Story Telling Contest for Non-Chinese Speaking 2017-18” and “NCS Cheung Chau Enquiry Study Report”. In sports, 4B Lo Wai Fung obtained champions in “12th CK Classic International Open Taekwondo Championship Malaysia 2018” while 3A Muhammad Mudassar Khan obtained Asian Cricket Association Tournament. These achievements made us proud.
The school keeps its pace with latest development. Following new trend of STEM education advocated in recent years, the school encourages students to be innovative and participate in various science and technology competition. And through STEM and inter disciplinary learning, students learn to be creative. Participants obtained 1st runner-up in “Robotic arm operation workshop cum national tournament” and gold medal in “Youth PRIVACY contest”.
In order to promote integration of NCS students into mainstream education, the school has poured resources in helping NCS students to learn the Chinese language. Students seize the chance and made school proud. It is my honour to see the first NCS student being admitted to HKU. Many NCS students also accomplished widely in inter-school competitions. To cultivate students’ soft skills such as self-knowledge, discipline, goals setting and self-reflection, the school scheduled rigorous learning opportunities such as courses of career planning. It is a delight to witness that students are well-provided and supported in their academic pursuit. It is our honour to have Dr. Lau Wai Wing Chief Engineer of the Physics Department in Oxford University to serves as the school’s academic advisor in the science field. On a similar note, Mr. Lo Yin Kue lecturer from The Education University of Hong Kong, was recruited as the consultant for Science and Math, giving well in time advice for teaching and learning.
As 2019 marks the 50th years anniversary of Wai Kiu College, apart from a series of celebration, the school also organised its Open Day on 25th and 26th May. I would like to take this opportunity to invite teachers, students, alumni, family and friends in the neighborhood to visit us for reviewing the joys and lights of Wai Kiu.
“Ten years it takes for tree-growing, a hundred years it takes for mind-making”. Looking ahead, the school has planned for the future. We continue to refine management and promote professionalism, take care of learner diversity, cultivate learning autonomy and to execute school philosophy promptly. These goals are for making students to be grown up who can stand on their feet in this rapidly-changing times. After all these years, the school has received generous guidance and support from donors as well as the wide community. We will continue to dedicate our effort to striving for excellence. Through our collective effort and quest for excellence, I believe WKC will continue to bring good standing to the community and to shed light in the neighborhood, embracing another glorious 50 years to come.
